Disney + has kicked off explosively with The Mandalorian. The Star Wars series fared better than expected. In fact, the series on RottenTomatoes easily beat The Rise of Skywalker, the latest Star Wars movie.
Now that that series has
ended, as a Disney + subscriber, you fall a bit in a hole. Yes, Disney has a
number of major series planned for 2020, including a Monsters Inc. animated
series and a big comeback for Lizzie McGuire, but the average Star Wars and
Marvel fan won't get an annual subscription for that.
WandaVision is the start
of Phase 4 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). We already know with
Avengers: Endgame how Phase 3 ended. But as usual in the MCU, it's never really
safe and another supervillain is on the way. Unfortunately, we do not yet know
who that will be and how the journey will go there is also a big question mark.
Fortunately, with
WandaVision we get our hands on a first puzzle piece. Disney has disclosed
little about the series so far. All we have to do is a trailer and a short
description. Fortunately, there are always some rumors. For example, in the
series, there are links with the new film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse The madness that will not be released until 2022.
It is also expected that a new organization will be started in WandaVision to replace SHIELD. This may also make it possible that heroes like X-Men, Fantastic Five, and Deadpool can also connect in the Avengers Universe.
The description of WandaVision according to Disney is as follows: “WandaVision is a mix between classic television and the MCU. In it, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) play two characters with superpowers who live the ideal suburban life. Yet not everything seems what it seems.”
The big mice apparently
realize that too, because Disney announced yesterday that WandaVision is coming
to Disney + in 2020. A striking announcement, given that the ambitious Marvel
series would initially only be released in 2021.
The series follows Scarlet Witch and Vision, also played in the series by Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany respectively. The Marvel series that come to the streaming service is different from the shows we know from Netflix. Just like with The Mandalorian and Star Wars, the Marvel series is just as important as the movies.
In fact, Marvel has already confirmed that WandaVision will have a direct impact on Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, a movie that will be in theaters from May 2021. Unfortunately, no exact release date has been announced yet, but Marvel fans can look forward to two very expensive productions on Disney + this year: Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Hopefully, more will be announced about WandaVision in
the coming weeks. In the meantime, Disney has a manageable video ready for you
in which you discover what you can expect as a subscriber of the streaming
service in 2020.
